Knitters and crochters what use less yarn?

I got very into crocheting which lead to my interest in learning to knit. I started reading knit book, doing basic stitches and taking a kniting cl. I also heard you could do pieces involving both, which was partly why I startedt to knit, but I also heard knitting uses less yarn. Is that true generally?
