Star trek - is it hard to follow?

Start with the original series and next generation. Deep space nine and to a lesser extent voyager are more episodic and require more attentive viewing. Don't let yourself get overwhelmed by technobable, keep in mind that most of the time the writers were making stuff up to advance plots not trying to provide precise scientific knowledge from the future.
