Do you have any suggestions on how to go about reinforcing a structural beam in my basement?

I don't understand why you can't simply replace the 6 x 6 post. Seems like all you need to is use a slightly shorter 6 x 6 post and an hydraulic jack to raise and support the beam. Then you could install a new 6 x 6 post. What am I missing about your problem?
